The Foundation El Güegüense The Wise Man Lancero represents Nicholas Melillo’s inaugural blend for Foundation Cigars. This Nicaraguan puro uses hand-selected tobaccos, including filler leaves from 2011 and 2012 vintage crops. Produced at TABSA in Jalapa, daily output is capped at 225 units to maintain quality control. Presented in boxes of 13, the lancero measures 7 inches by 40 ring gauge, featuring a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper with visible oil content.
Tobacco Composition and Construction
The blend combines a Nicaraguan binder with aged filler tobaccos from Estelí, Condega, and Jalapa regions. The Corojo wrapper contributes earth and cocoa notes, while the binder and fillers provide structural integrity. Combustion characteristics include an even burn and steady ash formation, attributed to the 7-year fermentation process applied to core components.
- Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo (1.5mm thickness)
- Binder: Nicaraguan Habano
- Fillers: Estelí viso, Condega seco, Jalapa ligero
Flavor Development
Initial draws reveal black pepper (1,500-2,000 SHU) and roasted coffee elements. Mid-section introduces cedar and cashew nuances, transitioning to citrus peel acidity in the final third. Retrohale delivers white pepper and mineral undertones, with smoke texture maintaining medium density throughout the 85-minute combustion time.
