Players Cigarettes originated in 1877 when John Player established a tobacco factory in Nottingham, England. Acquired by Imperial Tobacco in 1901, the brand expanded its portfolio with products like John Player Special (JPS) and Player's Navy Cut. The JPS line includes multiple variants: JPS Real Red in King Size and Superkings formats for full-strength smoking, JPS Bright with a smoother blend for lighter taste preferences, and JPS Green Filter as a non-menthol option complying with UK regulations. Players Cigarettes also introduced innovations like JPS New Crush, featuring a crushball capsule for customizable flavor, and John Player Special Legendary Black in premium black packaging.

Players Navy Cut retains its classic sailor-themed branding and multiple formats, while Players Max (launched in 2023) offers an extended length compared to standard King Size cigarettes. The brand's historic sailor logo, known as "Hero," remains a recognizable trademark. Imperial Tobacco maintains production across these lines, emphasizing traditional blends and format diversity without menthol options post-2020 legislation.
