The Tatuaje Black Label Private Reserve Toro originated from Pete Johnson’s attempt to recreate a personal blend gifted to him during a trip to Cuba. Developed with the Garcia family in Nicaragua, this cigar uses 100% Nicaraguan tobacco grown on their farms. Limited to 1,000 boxes of 20 cigars per size, production pauses for multiple years between releases.
The blend combines Criollo 98 and Corojo 99 tobaccos from Esteli and Jalapa regions. A marbled Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper encases the filler and binder, contributing to its rustic appearance and aromatic profile. The Toro measures 6" x 50 with a dark, oily finish.
Flavor and Construction Details
- Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro
- Filler/Binder: Nicaraguan Criollo 98 and Corojo 99
- Tasting Notes: Black pepper and earthy tones transition to cocoa, espresso, and leather mid-smoke, balanced by subtle dried fruit sweetness
Initial spice intensifies to medium-full strength without overpowering the palate. The cigar features even burn consistency and a smooth draw, attributed to the Garcia family’s traditional Cuban-style rolling techniques. This construction allows layered flavors to develop progressively over the 90-minute smoking duration.
Boxes include a metal Tatuaje crest, emphasizing the limited-edition status. Johnson describes the blend as capturing the essence of Nicaraguan tobacco craftsmanship, prioritizing complexity over visual uniformity.
