The Foundation Olmec Claro Corona Gorda features a Mexican San Andres wrapper with a light, slightly oily texture, paired with a Nicaraguan binder and aged filler tobaccos. Founder Nick Melillo developed this line after studying tobacco cultivation practices of the Olmec civilization in Mexico’s San Andres region, where ancient cultures first cultivated cigar tobacco over 3,000 years ago. The 5 ½ x 48 vitola uses filler leaves aged for three years in bales before rolling.
The cigar’s construction combines a Mexican binder with Nicaraguan and Mexican filler tobaccos. The blend produces flavors of earth and woodiness in the initial third, transitioning to cinnamon and cedar notes as the smoke progresses. The San Andres wrapper contributes a subtle creaminess without dominant sweetness.
- Wrapper: Mexican San Andres Claro
- Binder: Mexican
- Filler: Nicaraguan/Mexican
- Vitola: 5 ½ x 48 (Corona Gorda)
This medium-bodied smoke maintains consistent combustion characteristics, with a draw optimized for the corona gorda format. The three-year aging process of the filler tobacco reduces harshness while preserving the blend’s earthy foundation. The Olmec Claro Corona Gorda’s flavor evolution makes it suitable for morning or afternoon smoking sessions.
Historical records indicate the Olmec civilization constructed pyramids and developed advanced agricultural techniques in San Andres between 1600-400 BCE, establishing early cigar-making traditions that influence modern Mexican tobacco production.
