The Cohiba Robusto maintains its position as a cornerstone of Cuban cigar history. Originating in 1966 as a private reserve for Fidel Castro, the brand initially produced only the Lancero vitola before commercial expansion. Cohiba debuted in international markets during the 1989 global release, with the Robusto introduced as the brand’s thickest format at the time.
Key milestones in the Cohiba Robusto’s development include:
- 1966 – Creation of the Lancero size exclusively for Castro
- 1982 – Commercial launch in Spain with three initial vitolas
- 1989 – Global release featuring the Robusto format
Measuring 124mm in length with a 50 ring gauge, the Cohiba Robusto combines triple-fermented tobacco leaves from Cuba’s Vuelta Abajo region. Its construction follows traditional Cuban cigar-making techniques, using a capote leaf binder and seco/ligero filler tobaccos. The format’s dimensions became an industry reference point for robusto-style cigars.
